The Bees details life inside an English bee hive - and one bee in particular, Flora 717. Flora 717 is the lowest of the various classes of bees - a sanitation worker - and life isn't easy if you're a bee.Far from being a fluffy Disney-like story, this is a grim dystopian thriller of cult-like control, religious fundamentalism and random murder.
The alienness of the setting and life experience of the subject means it takes a little while to get into, but it is worth persevering with.
Verdict: Not for weak-hearted.
